BOARD UPDATE

It is with great regret that we announce Lee Zajac’s resignation from the Board of Directors.  Lee served our community for several years as Board Secretary.  Lee was a driving force for our website and landscaping project.  We thank her for her service.

Welcome new Board Member:   Carol Woodhurst Unit #22

Note from Carol:  Ten years ago, my husband, Ken, and I purchased unit #22–the best decision we ever made.  We love Lakeside Club and all of the great people who live here.  Though former neighbors try to get us to sell and join them across town, we are here to stay.  We love to ski, kayak, hike, swim, Pickleball (Ken) and it’s all right here!  Our primary residence is in Jackson, but we are at Lakeside Club every other weekend.  So many great improvements are being made in our community and I look forward to helping any way I can.

WEBPAGE OF THE MONTH

Loons of Round Lake (ROUND LAKE menu)

According to Bud Siudara, a pair of loons has now arrived on Round Lake. Lakeside Club members are fortunate to have access to a lake that accommodates loons, which are often found only in wilderness areas.  This web page will tell you all about the Common Loon and how to avoid disturbing nesting loons on Round Lake, and its Loon Report will keep you updated about the activities of the loons with reports from observers like Bud, a co-owner in the Lakeside Club. You can also participate, by reporting significant loon observations to jwillehman@gmail.com.  Bud will be providing us with a report in our monthly newsletter also.

ROUND LAKE LOON REPORT

Report from Bud Siudara:  As Great Lakes Sailors would say, it was blowing “stink” out of the east when Sue and I arrived on Saturday afternoon, the 21st. The ice was out. An east wind is always an unpleasant wind full of left-handed low pressure. There wasn’t a car in the Lakeside parking lot or even at Toski. There wasn’t a chance that afternoon to check to see if our loons had arrived.

Sunday morning was pleasantly different. No wind, flat water, and a warm 65+ temp that suggested Spring is around the corner. At 9:00 I went on my deck with my trusty 7 x 35 mm long eyes in hand to search the lake looking for our annual visitors that I knew had arrived days before. This was a “first look” task I’ve been doing since 1998.

I wasn’t disappointed. There they were about 400 yds out in the lake separated by maybe 20 feet with their heads in the straight away classic loon look ahead. And then, as if to say hello, the male raised his head and let go with a vibrant tremolo mating call that’s heard infrequently from April – May. And then a few seconds later he let go with another. The male obviously had something in mind. What a special welcome!

Can it get better than this! How the loon pair comes back each year to Round Lake is a mystery of nature. Let’s hope they mate and have a chick or two. “EDC” (Early obstetrical short for “Estimated Date of Confinement” is early July.

May is Morel Mushroom month in northern Michigan.  May is likely named after Maia, the goddess of growth.  May’s birth flower is the lily of the valley.

Astronomical Events in May 2022

Earthshine Nights: The Waxing and Waning Crescent Moon phases in April and May are the best time to see earthshine, where the unlit part of the Moon becomes visible. It is also known as Da Vinci glow.

Eta Aquarid Meteors: On May 5, 2022, you have a chance to spot the shower that is named after the brightest star of the constellation Aquarius (water bearer), Eta Aquarii. Use our handy Interactive Meteor Shower Sky Map to increase your chances of meteor spotting.

Flower Moon: The Full Moon of May is known as the Flower Moon, named after the blooming flowers in the Northern Hemisphere, where these traditional Full Moon names originated.

Total Lunar Eclipse: The total lunar eclipse of the Flower Moon will be visible from North and South America, Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia on May 16, 2022.

Thanks to Kevin Kissinger, Greg Waller, Bud Siudara, Carol Woodhurst, and John Lehman for their submissions.
